Just like some people belong together. Some are with their ‘right person at the wrong time’, ‘wrong person at the right time’, ‘right person at the right time’ and ‘wrong person at the wrong time’. Grace and Ian started off as complete strangers. They were grad school classmates but never spoke to each other, occasionally acknowledging each others presence. It was their field trip during the sophomore year when their friends circle interacted. The students sat in a circle around the bonfire, enjoying the night away. Soon, Grace and Ian exchanged numbers. Smiles turned into conversations, conversations into texts and texts to longer durations of phone calls. It was as if, the more they spoke the less it felt. Their friend group started hanging out together too. Be it the cafeteria or the library, the friends would always find Ian and Grace together laughing in their own bubble.
When The Vibe Matches
The sophomores started meeting often and spoke for hours and hours. Sometimes they would talk about really random stuff like how pineapple on pizza is a no-go and sometimes deeper philosophical talks. Ian felt like he has been friends with Grace for a really long time. He connected with Grace in a way he never did with anyone else.
Gathering The Courage To Ask Her Out
A year passed by. Grace and Ian were now in their senior year. A year older and mature. Over the period of a year, Ian realized that what he felt for Grace was something more than platonic. Soon he knew, he liked Grace, for over a year now. Grace too felt the same. Although both of them confided their feelings for each other in their circle of friends. Ian was tenacious about asking Grace out for a date. He knew Grace was a woman he would regret missing out on. Without further ado, he garnered courage and asked Grace out on a coffee date. She gladly accepted it.

When Grace said yes for a date, Ian started planning for the date pronto. Taking everything in consideration, he settled for a coffee date as he didn’t want to overwhelm Grace by going all out. He thought he’d rather keep it cozy and comfortable for Grace. When they met at the coffee shop everything went just what they thought like. The talked about a lot of things over a cup of coffee. Their likes, dislikes, things that pique their interest and what not! And guess what this led to? They started dating!
The Dating Phase
Grace and Ian were the most understanding two people when dating. Neither of them wanted to rush things. They wanted to take it slow, let the connection take its own course rather than forcing it and it made sense in a way. Together, they wanted to explore. Grace and Ian hadn’t dated anyone in the past. They both were each other’s firsts.
The Next Step Of Love
Grace and Ian dated for a year, taking this as slow as possible. Both of them were very careful with taking things forward. Grace concluded that it was time to take things further. She wanted to ask Ian to be her boyfriend. She wanted it to be unconventional. They met at the park. While taking a walk, breathing in on the picturesque view around them, very domestic. They took a seat at one of the benches at the park. Gearing up some courage she finally asked him, “Will you be my boyfriend?” Ian was elated to hear that question and he without wasting a moment said yes!
Officially Committed!
It was official! They were officially a couple now. They shared this news with their friends and they were ecstatic to hear about it. For their friends, they were a perfect couple. Two people who found their soulmates, and they actually did. Grace and Ian were each other’s missing puzzle piece. They fit together perfectly to complete each other.
Graduating Together!
Grace and Ian were an ideal campus who were chasing their dream together. They weren’t the students who scored straight A’s but did fairly good as compared to other students. They were focused when it came down to their academics and nothing distracted them. The couple, post their senior year, happily got graduated.
Ascending In Their Careers
The couple were rapidly ascending in their prospective careers and they still managed to take out time for each other from their busy schedules. They never let the work stress strain their relationship. That is how Grace and Ian had a successful run of relationship for two and a half year.
The First Crack
As they grew in their careers, so did the responsibilities at work. Soon Grace was offered with an overseas opportunity that would boost her career as she was in her prime. Ian was enraptured when Grace shared this news with him. Although, it dawned on him how Grace will be away from him. This thought didn’t sit right with him.
Unfamiliar Distance
Ian involuntarily started distancing himself from Grace. He wouldn’t pick up her calls or reply to her texts the way he would. All Grace could hear back from him were reason, being busy, can’t talk now, don’t have the energy. Grace quickly caught on his act that he was being distant. She wanted to hear why that was happening. She sternly asked Ian to meet him and understand the ambiguity among them.
The Talk
Ian finally met Grace. They sat down and started talking about it. The conversation soon took a turn and ended up in an argument. Their voices were raised and breaths were battered. Ian expressed out his frustration to Grace about how he can’t do long distance even when she assured him. The argument turned dirty when Ian called her selfish and hastily asked for a breakup. His words eventually made Grace crestfallen. Silently, she stood up, nodded her head Ian and immediately left the place.
The Distance Before Love Rekindled
Grace couldn’t fathom the fact that Ian took such a big step. Breakup? It was not even an option for her. She wanted them to workout even during a long distance but Ian was not up for it. She was completely shattered but she knew she had to gear up for her departure. The overseas opportunity was exactly what will boost her career. Although, her heart was still stuck and crying for Ian. As for Ian, he pondered on the words he had spoken, regretting it.

Grace was determined to make the best out of the opportunity that she had gotten. She was persistent that she had to do her best. Although, what went down at her hometown still loomed around at the back of her head. Back home, Ian was devastated. He regretted everything that he said and acted. It didn’t take much time for him to realize that Grace was it. She was his end game. But, he also knew his words and actions had wrecked the most beautiful thing that he had loved and cherished.

Ian was in dilemma of what had happened. It had been six months since him and Grace broke up and she flew overseas. Nothing felt the same anymore without Grace. His mind was in a complete mess. It wasn’t much different for Grace either. However, Grace compartmentalized everything and directed all her attention to her new job. Time went by quick. Ian couldn’t gather the courage to even text Grace.

Time passed by and both, Ian and Grace had moved on from what had happened. Although, both of them knew that deep down, they still yearned for each other. It had been five years since their breakup. Five years since they parted ways and were in a ‘no contact’ phase. A day didn’t pass by for Grace when she wouldn’t think about Ian. She had a box of memories that she used to open during the date of their anniversaries. Ian could not muster the courage to talk to Grace. He was ashamed of his own actions. After years of consideration, Grace had finally decided to give a visit to her home town.

Ian got to know that Grace was returning back home. He was elated after listening to this news. Over the years, Ian had thought deeply about everything. He finally had a chance which he didn’t want to lose. Definitely he did feel like he had lost ample amount of time to reconcile with her. Ian came up with everything about how he wanted to apologize, how he wanted her to take her time and whether negative or positive, he will understand whatever decision she takes.

When Grace arrived in her hometown, she felt delighted. After all, nothing feels like home until its yours. She spent time with her family and friends but somewhere she hoped she could meet Ian. It was as if manifested that she received a call from him. They decided to meet. None of them were holding any grudges. But if it there was something left, then it was nothing but the regret for all the time that they had lost. The time they could have spent together and explored the world.

When they met at the restaurant, both sat in silence. Thousands of questions were being answered instead of it being awkwardly silent. Finally Ian garnered courage and initiated the conversation. The conversation went smoothly. It was as if they never broke up. Both of them were proud of each others achievements. Ian determined to win Grace back and asked for her forgiveness. She asked for a time of three months to give it a thought. Although there was no bad blood between them, they needed time to mend things and naturally fall back together.

Ian patiently waited for Grace’s decision and guess what? They got back together! Both of them understood what being apart from each other felt like and they didn’t want to feel that all over again. Everyone around them was happy for them. Finally, their love rekindled. Their love was never lost.

Grace relocated back to her hometown. A year later, Ian finally popped the question and Grace gladly said Yes! The couple wasn’t in a hurry to tie the knot, but they knew that if they wanted to settle down, they only wanted to do it with each other. Few months later, the duo finally started planning for their wedding. Both of them were very excited to start a new chapter of their lives together.
